Basic Painting Supplies

In addition to bringing with you to class the teachers' recommended supplies, listed in each class description, the SDP Teachers Committee recommends the following basic supplies for each medium:

Acrylic & Acrylic Gouache Supplies

  • A good assortment of brushes, including flats, angles, liners, rounds, filberts and mops
  • Palette paper
  • Tracing paper
  • Transfer paper (both light and dark)
  • Palette knife
  • Stylus
  • Paper towels
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Water container
  • Brush cleaner
  • Small containers to store paint for unfinished projects

Colored Pencil Supplies

  • Non-wax graphite paper (gray and white)
  • Tracing paper
  • Stylus
  • Drafting or artists tape, 1"
  • Electric pencil sharpener
  • Electric eraser
  • Paper towels
  • 6" or 12" C-Thru ruler
  • Foam core board or other flat surface for support
  • Optional: Handheld pencil sharpener, scissors, photo holder, note paper

Watercolor Supplies

  • Watercolor brushes; 1" and 1.5" flats, no. 8 or no. 10 round, liner brush
  • 2 water containers
  • non-wax graphite paper (gray and white)
  • Masking fluid
  • Tracing paper
  • Double-ball stylus
  • Drafting or artists tape, 1"
  • Pencil and sharpener
  • White vinyl eraser
  • Cotton swabs
  • Spray bottle
  • Palette
  • Paper towels (cut into quarters)
  • Handheld fan
  • Scissors
  • Toothbrush for spattering
  • 6" or 12" C-Thru ruler
  • Optional:
    • Photo holder,
    • assorted sponges (rinsed),
    • sea sponges,
    • synthetic sponges,
    • note paper,
    • 1-oz. container for masking fluid (old water bottle cap works well),
    • old no.1 round brush for masking fluid, small bar of soap for masking fluid

Oil Painting Supplies

  • Graphite paper (gray and white)
  • Tracing paper
  • Stylus
  • Drafting or artists tape
  • Paper towels
  • Small containers for turp and medium
  • Palette paper
  • Palette knife
  • Brushes (see class supplies list for specifics)
  • Bristle brushes (stiff bristles-not soft-for use on canvases); flat or filbert, small, medium, large
  • Sable brushes for details (synthetics okay for some classes); no. 2, no. 4, no. 8 & up for larger surfaces
  • Liners (short and long)
  • Round or filbert, if a strokework class
  • Optional:
    • photo holder,
    • note paper,
    • plastic cling wrap to cover palette,
    • aluminum foil for heat-set oil class
