Meet Susan Vrana

SDP member Susan Vrana’s artwork is being featured in an art exhibit at the Tuxedo Library in Tuxedo Park, New York, running July 1 through August 12. Recently, she shared her story of how she started painting.

“If I had known how much I’d loved painting, I would’ve started sooner.

In May 2015, I signed up to take free watercolor classes at my local library, the Woodbury Public Library. My teacher’s name was Pat Foxx. That’s where I discovered I could paint.

Since then, I’ve taken several painting classes at the same library and at my senior center where I could bring my own pictures to paint.

One of my friends was in the Orange Blossoms Decorative Artists Chapter in Orange County, New York. She invited me to attend two classes with her Chapter before I decided to join SDP in November.

This past April, almost exactly one year after I started to paint, I was at a class in a neighboring town where I was presented with the opportunity to show my art at the Tuxedo Library this summer. I agreed, and got busy preparing for the show.

The experience has been great so far. I already have another exhibit lined up at my library in September.

My mother is also an artist. She only started painting nine years ago. At 90, she mainly uses pastels and acrylics, and paints animals and birds. Her father, my grandfather, was an artist and a musician. So, I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree!”
