  • Can you use a board that you purchased from SDP a few years ago or do you have to purchase a new one every year?
    • Yes, you can use a board that you purchased from the Society in the past.

 

  • Do you have to use the same carton that the surface kit came in to mail your entry?
    • Yes you must use the same box that the kit came in. These boxes have been specially made to protect your painting in mailing. This was also to help with the handling of so many entries. There was a time that they received entries in all shapes and sizes of boxes. It was extremely difficult to handle.

 

  • Can you purchase a new carton if you don’t have one or it was ruined?
    • Yes you can order a new box but there is a fee for the box plus shipping and handling. The cost of the box was figured in the price of your first order.

 

  • Why is it so important to mail your entry to Conference between the dates given?
    • To make sure that your entry is received and there is enough time to record and transfer to the Conference site.

 

  • What categories do not require a center of interest?
    • CDA Stroke and MDA Stroke

 

  • When working on a dark background it is called a low key.
    • If a painting is “low-key” that means that most or the entire image is dark in value. A painting that is high key is mostly painted in light colors.

 

  • Can color create a mood to a painting?
    • Yes. For instance, Red produces energy where blue is calming.Do light colors always advance and dark colors always recede? Not always. On a light background dark colors advance.
  • Do light colors always advance and dark colors always recede?
    • Not always. On a light background dark colors advance.

 

  • How important is the temperature of a color in relationship to advancing or receding an object?
    • It is very important. For instance: when you have a warm background cool colors advance and on a cool background warm colors advance.

 

  • What is the most important part of a painting but must be the least noticed?
    • The background is the foundation of your painting. It is the supporting structure of your design. You want your design to be the main focal point not your background.

 

  • Can the border line on the MDA Stroke tray be moved or must it stay in the position as it is shown in the line drawing?
    •  It must stay in the position that is shown in the line drawing.

 

  • When selecting a color for the frame, is it necessary for it to be in your color scheme?
    • It would be better to have it in the color scheme to support the design. Using a color from your color scheme would form a relationship to your design.

 

  • Do the judges know what country the entries come from?
    • No. When the judges arrive in the judging room, all the entries are out of their boxes and the boxes have been cleared of their address labels. Only the Judge Coordinator and Staff Coordinator have the information of where the entries are from.

 

  • What is the claim ticket used for?
    • It has your number on it and is used to claim your board if you are picking it up at Conference.

 

  • Can your number be placed on the back of your board with a permanent marker or do you need to paint it on?
    • You may use a permanent marker and it doesn’t have to be fancy. The important thing is that it is permanently placed on the back.
