Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I always loved painting. I have been a decorative painter since 1984 and joined SDP in 1985. I also love sharing this art form and became a teacher in 1985. When SDP started the TDA program, I signed right up, earning my certificate as a “Teacher of Decorative Art” in 2003.

In a few words, tell us about the class you’re teaching at Oceans of Color.

My class is for all levels of experience. Everyone will learn and have fun. It is a good way for timid acrylic painters to experience oils. I will not be using any mediums nor will we do any spraying on this piece.

Why should someone take your class?

Students will learn to create dimension with ink strokes and then add color. Accents of color and dimensional items will be used to tie the whole design together, thus teaching color theory and unity.

What are you looking forward to the most at Oceans of Color?

The energy and inspiration of being with others who love to create beautiful things!

What do you love most about the painting industry?

Expressing myself through art and being able to teach it to others.

Register for Debra’s class and our other classes and events at Oceans of Color. Stay tuned to meet another teacher next week right here on the SDP Blog!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Painting has been a part of my life – always! My grandmother was an art teacher. We always did art projects. So, here I am, still painting and showing others how much fun painting can be!

In a few words, tell us about the class you’re teaching at Oceans of Color.

In my class, we’ll draw with India ink and then use liquid watercolors and a water mister to let the paint flow! Pretty fun!

Why should someone take your class?

You’ll learn to enjoy painting and not stress about it. Many people look at painting in one direction. In class, we'll look at it in multiple ways.

Another thing about my class is it is open to all levels of participants. Usually, I have award-winning artists and individuals who are just learning to paint in the same class. This is a great combination of people because everyone is painting…maybe at different levels, yet learning something new.

What are you looking forward to the most at Oceans of Color?

I always love meeting new groups of painters!

What do you love most about the painting industry?

The Dr. Ph. Martin’s Hydrus Watercolors I use are made in Golden, Colorado, right down the way from me. These paints make watercolor painting so efficient. The mixing happens right on the paper. The other number one reason I use the paints is they are light fast – no fading and they are non-toxic. Anyone using these paints will create a professional-looking piece of art they’ll want to hang in their home.

Register for Janet’s class and our other classes and events at Oceans of Color. Stay tuned to meet another teacher next week right here on the SDP Blog!

Introduction to the “Meet the Teachers” Blog Series

meet-the-teachers-1200x907-2Every year the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP) Conference & Expo brings together the world’s best teachers of decorative painting.   SDP would like to highlight some of those teachers in a blog series entitled, “Meet the Teachers”. Over the next several weeks, we will take the time to get to know some of our 2015 Conference teachers and learn more about their art, inspiration and designs. We hope the interviews inspire you to continue painting and get you excited about attending the upcoming SDP Conference & Expo.  Look for our first interview on February 10th when we feature Louise Jackson, MDA, TDA. Did you know that Louise has authored 23 how to paint books? In the meantime, check out all of the great classes being offered at this year’s Conference. Registration will open on February 10th.
